Real Madrid Snatch JJ Gabriel from Manchester United for €400,000
At 16 years old, prodigy striker JJ Gabriel is set to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid. Thanks to his European passport, the transfer bypasses FIFA restrictions on minors for a training compensation fee estimated at €400,000.
Real Madrid are on the verge of signing JJ Gabriel, 16, a prodigy striker from Manchester United, for a training compensation fee estimated at €400,000. The verbal agreement is nearly sealed according to journalist Florian Plettenberg and Spanish newspaper Marca, despite competition from PSG, Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona and Chelsea.
Born in London in October 2010, Gabriel’s real name is Joseph Junior Andreou O’Cearuill. He came through the academies of Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham before joining Manchester United in 2022, progressing at an unusually rapid pace. In April 2025, at just 14 years old, he made his U18 debut for the Red Devils, scoring a brace against Leeds. The following season, he scored 26 goals in 29 matches, won the Premier League U18 Player of the Year award and became the youngest recipient in club history of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year.
Integrated into first-team preparations and having scored a hat-trick on his Youth League debut, Gabriel seemed destined for a future in red at Old Trafford. But in September, when he was due to make his first official appearance with the senior side in the League Cup against Brighton, his entourage requested the cancellation of his registration with the club. The reason given: deep disagreements over the pace of his development, with his family wanting faster integration into the top level than Manchester United’s management was proposing. Since then, the teenager has been training alone in Spain with a personal fitness coach.
Since FIFA in principle blocks the international transfer of a minor player, Real Madrid exploited a decisive regulatory loophole: thanks to his Irish and Cypriot heritage, Gabriel holds a European passport, which allows him to complete a transfer within the EU/EEA from the age of 16 — a route closed to any competing English club.
In Madrid, the player is initially expected to play for Castilla, the club’s reserve team, while training with the professional squad.
