Tuchel drops Palmer from England squad for missing 'too many opportunities'
Thomas Tuchel has left Cole Palmer out of his 25-man England squad for the Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain, citing the Chelsea forward's repeated absences from international camps. Josh King and Jobe Bellingham receive first call-ups.
Thomas Tuchel has omitted Cole Palmer from his 25-man England squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain, pointing to the Chelsea forward’s pattern of withdrawals from international camps as the decisive factor.
Palmer pulled out of England’s September camp and has not featured for his country since March. Tuchel made clear at a press conference at Wembley that the decision was not personal but a matter of rewarding those who committed to the previous two-and-a-half-week training period.
“It counts when you are in camp,” Tuchel said. “He misses too many opportunities to impress. The players and the boys who were in camp built something extraordinary throughout these weeks. That’s why the credit goes to them. The trust is for them.”
The Germany-born coach was careful to avoid questioning Palmer’s desire to represent England. “We will never assume that Cole is not in the mindset to come and desperate to play for his country, but the competition is on and the players who were in camp did an amazing job and kept their place.”
Tuchel also pointed to the depth he already has in the No 10 role as a further reason for the omission. Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White, Eberechi Eze, and Jude Bellingham all provide options in that position. “There are enough No 10s, and we stick to the guys who were in camp because camp was excellent,” he added.
Palmer has been available and active at club level, starting all nine of Chelsea’s Premier League matches this season, though he was sent off in their defeat to Tottenham. His absence from the national team setup stretches back to an injury-disrupted period that also caused him to miss the World Cup qualification cycle.
Among the notable inclusions are first-time call-ups for Josh King and Jobe Bellingham — younger brother of Jude — with Tuchel highlighting King’s versatility across four positions as a key factor in his selection.
