Maresca says Donnarumma needs no lectures after string of costly Chelsea errors
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has spoken with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma following a series of high-profile mistakes, including a costly error against RB Leipzig, but insists the Italian international recognises his own faults without needing deep conversations.
Enzo Maresca has played down concerns over Gianluigi Donnarumma’s recent form, saying the Chelsea goalkeeper is self-aware enough to correct his mistakes without being told. Donnarumma was at fault for RB Leipzig’s opening goal in midweek and has produced a string of shaky performances, even as Chelsea have started the season strongly across all competitions.
Maresca, who shares a native language with his goalkeeper, described their communication as straightforward. “With Gigio it’s quite easy because every time he has made some mistake or something that was not correct, he recognises immediately,” the Chelsea head coach said. “Sometimes you don’t need to be so deep with some players because you know that they know that they have made a mistake and they recognise that and just try to avoid that and move on.”
The Italian manager acknowledged that Donnarumma has also produced important saves during this period, pointing to an excellent stop from Christoph Baumgartner in the Leipzig match as evidence that the goalkeeper’s overall contribution remains positive. “It’s just a matter of balance, try to avoid mistakes and continue to do the right things,” Maresca added.
Donnarumma’s place in the team is not under immediate threat, with back-up Geronimo Rulli yet to apply meaningful pressure for the starting berth. However, the errors are drawing increasing scrutiny as Chelsea prepare to face Nottingham Forest, where a third consecutive league defeat would represent a significant early-season setback.
Maresca’s relaxed public stance reflects a broader confidence in Donnarumma’s character and experience, but the goalkeeper will know that performances — not just self-awareness — will ultimately determine how long that patience holds.
