Orlando Gill confirms release clause as United close in on £100m midfield double deal
Manchester United are edging toward two midfield signings worth close to £100m, while Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill has confirmed he holds a release clause amid reported interest from Old Trafford.
Manchester United are closing in on a pair of midfield signings worth close to £100m, with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill also confirming he holds a release clause in his contract that could open the door to a move to Old Trafford.
Gill, 26, emerged as a reported United target after a series of standout performances for Paraguay at the World Cup, drawing attention with displays against Germany and France. United are said to be seeking additional competition for first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens, with Aston Villa also credited with interest in the San Lorenzo stopper.
Argentinian outlet Clarin reported that San Lorenzo is carrying close to £50m in debt, a financial situation that could ease any potential deal. The publication also noted Gill’s contract contains a release clause of approximately £5.2m.
Speaking after returning to Paraguay, Gill addressed the speculation directly. “I can’t say yes or no. They told me there is interest, but not a formal offer. I don’t want to get carried away. We’ll sit down and speak with the club to see what is best,” he said. He added: “I have a clause in my contract and I think it has to be respected. Then it depends on the club. If it’s good for both parties, we’ll have to reach an agreement.”
On the outfield front, United are reported to be on the verge of completing the signing of Andrey Santos, with the Brazilian midfielder understood to have undergone a medical ahead of a £50m switch. The deal has not been universally welcomed among former players, however, with Old Trafford legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt said to have reservations about the acquisition.
The twin midfield pursuit, combined with the emerging goalkeeper interest, signals an ambitious and expensive summer for the club as they look to reshape their squad under Michael Carrick.
