Guehi, Rice and James return to training as England prepare for Norway World Cup quarter-final
Marc Guehi, Declan Rice and Reece James all trained with England on Friday ahead of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami, easing fitness concerns ahead of the tie. Jordan Henderson remains the only absentee as he recovers from wrist surgery.
Marc Guehi, Declan Rice and Reece James all trained with England at Inter Miami’s facilities on Friday, giving manager Thomas Tuchel a significant boost on the eve of the World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami.
Guehi had been reported to be carrying a hamstring injury, while vice-captain Rice had been struck down by a stomach bug after England’s last-16 victory in Mexico. James, meanwhile, had missed the team’s previous three matches with a hamstring problem of his own. All three took part in the full session alongside the rest of the squad.
Jordan Henderson was the only player absent, continuing his recovery from wrist surgery sustained during the celebrations at the Estadio Azteca following the win over Mexico.
“We had everyone available in training, which we of course like,” Tuchel said. “We have the full choice except for our suspended player Jarell Quansah, so that’s the good news.”
Quansah is serving a two-match ban after receiving a straight red card — confirmed by a VAR review — for a challenge on Jesus Gallardo during the second half against Mexico. FIFA’s disciplinary panel deemed the foul to constitute “serious foul play” under its disciplinary code.
Tuchel was asked whether the extended ban could be connected to his post-match criticism of the refereeing standard in that game. “I don’t think so, but we also have no explanation,” he replied.
