Old Trafford tram closures and severe weather disrupt travel for United vs Bournemouth
Fans heading to Old Trafford for Manchester United's Sunday clash with Bournemouth face significant travel disruption, with three Metrolink lines shut for engineering works and severe weather straining the wider rail network. Replacement shuttle buses are running from Altrincham Interchange and Piccadilly Gardens for £2 a ride.
Supporters travelling to Old Trafford for Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth on Sunday at 2pm are facing a severely disrupted journey, with three Metrolink lines closed and adverse weather compounding pressure on the wider transport network.
Major engineering works have forced the complete closure of the Altrincham, Trafford Park and Eccles Metrolink lines for a fortnight, meaning no direct tram services will run from Manchester city centre to the stadium. The disruption affects the more than 74,000 fans expected to attend the match, which falls during Michael Carrick’s tenure as manager.
Severe weather has added a further layer of difficulty, causing cancellations and delays across the local rail network. Supporters hoping to use the Metrolink’s remaining open routes will find the Airport and East Didsbury lines running on a heavily reduced schedule. Transport authorities have advised fans travelling from those areas to ride as far as Firswood and make alternative arrangements from there.
To help manage the increased matchday traffic, dedicated replacement shuttle buses have been laid on at a flat fare of £2 per journey. Services will operate on a frequent, load-and-go basis from both Altrincham Interchange and Piccadilly Gardens.
The Bee Network, which oversees public transport in Greater Manchester, issued an official statement urging fans to plan ahead. “To support football fans travelling to and from Old Trafford, a range of alternative public transport options will be available, including replacement bus services, Bee Network bus services, ticket acceptance on selected rail services and a programme of dedicated football shuttle buses,” the authority said. “Allow plenty of time for travel. We suggest departing an hour earlier than normal to ensure you arrive at the ground on time.”
