Carrick drops Fernandes for Bournemouth clash and refuses to rule out captaincy strip
Michael Carrick has benched Bruno Fernandes for Manchester United's match against Bournemouth, insisting the decision is purely footballing — though he declined to rule out stripping the Portuguese captain of the armband.
Michael Carrick has dropped Bruno Fernandes to the bench for Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, publicly insisting the decision is based on football rather than discipline — but stopping short of guaranteeing Fernandes will keep the captaincy.
The move comes days after Fernandes publicly criticised Carrick’s tactical approach following United’s 4-1 defeat to Como. “It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them,” Fernandes said after that game, “but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence.”
Asked directly whether the benching was footballing or disciplinary in nature, Carrick was unequivocal: “Pure football. Pure football.” He acknowledged the difficulty of team selection but framed it as a straightforward managerial call. “You’re picking a team, a starting XI, you’ve got options to choose from so there’s always a difficult decision,” he said. “We’ve got to make what we think is the right one for the team to try and get the performance we want.”
On the captaincy question, Carrick was notably less definitive. He declined to rule out removing the armband from Fernandes, saying he would act in the club’s best interests. “The most important thing for me is the team, first and foremost, is the squad, is the dynamics in the squad,” Carrick said. “And again, it’s about the football club. And I’ll always do what’s best for the football club.”
The episode adds to a turbulent period at Old Trafford. Fernandes’ public remarks arrived just a week after Lisandro Martínez publicly criticised the United hierarchy following the club’s defeat to Atlético Madrid — a second high-profile player challenge to the management in quick succession during what has already been a difficult start to the season.
With Carrick unwilling to close the door on a captaincy change, the situation around Fernandes — United’s most influential attacking player and skipper — looks set to remain a focal point regardless of the result against Bournemouth.
