Carrick drops Fernandes for Bournemouth clash after captain's public attack on his tactics

Bruno Fernandes has been dropped to the bench for Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth after publicly criticising manager Michael Carrick in the wake of Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat to Como.
Carrick left his captain — and the reigning PFA Player of the Year — out of the starting XI, handing the armband to former skipper Harry Maguire and selecting Youri Tielemans and Mason Mount in midfield instead. It is the first time Fernandes has been dropped for a Premier League game in almost seven years at United, a player who has otherwise only missed matches through injury, suspension or rotation.
The fallout stems from an explosive interview Fernandes gave after the Como defeat, in which he placed responsibility for United’s lack of pressing squarely on the manager. Carrick had already substituted his captain during that game, and at Friday’s press conference declined to confirm whether Fernandes would retain the captaincy — a pointed signal that the relationship had deteriorated sharply.
Fernandes has been in poor form this season, going seven appearances without a goal, which gave Carrick additional cover for the decision.
Former United captain Gary Neville said Carrick had been left with no choice. “I don’t think there is any way that Carrick can start Fernandes today,” Neville said. “When I saw Carrick’s face on Friday, you could see in his eyes he was going to embark on something that was going to bring this to a head. It’s a direct attack on the manager. If you go back 25 years, these players would never be anywhere near the club, never mind the pitch. They’d be gone. Finished.”
The episode marks a significant moment in Fernandes’s tenure at Old Trafford. The 32-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been one of United’s most influential players since joining in January 2020, but his public criticism of the head coach has now produced the most dramatic consequence of his time at the club.
