Obi loan exit eyed, Lacey primes for audition and Arsenal close in on Monga

Manchester United's academy players are preparing for pre-season, with Chido Obi's future uncertain as a European loan is considered the best path forward. Meanwhile, Shea Lacey is training in Marbella ahead of a push for first-team minutes, and Arsenal are in formal talks to sign Leicester's Jeremy Monga.

Manchester United’s academy players are gearing up for pre-season, due to report to Carrington in two weeks, with several notable storylines already taking shape around the club’s youth setup.

Lacey targets bigger role in 2026/27

Shea Lacey is among those taking his preparation into his own hands ahead of the new campaign. The young midfielder made four senior appearances for United last season, including a cameo on the final day, and club staff are said to be excited about the role he could play going forward.

Lacey is currently training in Marbella before the official pre-season begins — a destination with precedent at United. Kobbie Mainoo used the Spanish resort for a training camp in October, and the club arranged a full-squad warm-weather camp there in 2020.

Obi’s next step: a loan move to Europe

Chido Obi’s situation heading into 2026/27 is less clear-cut. United opted to keep the young striker in youth football for the entirety of last season, having decided he was overexposed too soon after seven senior appearances in 2024/25. The focus was on improving his off-the-ball work and hold-up play under Ruben Amorim’s watch.

Obi showed progress, but whether he has developed enough to contribute meaningfully to the first team remains in doubt. The assessment from those who watched him regularly is that a loan move would serve him best — though not necessarily to the EFL Championship, which is considered too physically demanding at this stage of his development.

A loan to a European league with a lower tempo and less physicality is seen as the more suitable option, with the Eredivisie in the Netherlands cited as a potential fit.

Arsenal close in on Monga

Arsenal are moving closer to signing Jeremy Monga from Leicester City, with formal club-to-club talks now under way. The 16-year-old winger made 30 first-team appearances for Leicester last season and has attracted significant interest following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Manchester United had tracked Monga and held discussions over a possible move earlier this year, but that interest did not progress. A reported £15 million price tag, combined with questions over where Monga would fit within United’s setup, made the deal difficult to justify. Arsenal have since moved to the front of the queue and appear set to take him to the Emirates.
