Manchester City could face a 60-point deduction after being found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations, according to TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil, who cited two separate sources on his breakfast show. The independent commission found City guilty of all but one of the charges brought against them, and while the club lodged a formal appeal on 1 October 2026, speculation over potential sanctions has intensified.

Brazil was candid about the unverified nature of the claim. “This might be nonsense but two different sources have told me this,” he said. “I’m hearing 60-point deduction. Six-zero point deduction, which will please people and still give City a chance of survival. I don’t know if it’s this season — I can’t see how it can be this season, because by the time they get it through it’ll be too late.”

A 60-point deduction would be the largest in Premier League history, though it would not automatically guarantee City’s relegation depending on when it is applied.

Fellow pundit Ally McCoist suggested the reported figure would fall short of what rival clubs are likely to demand. “I think a lot of people wouldn’t think that’s enough,” McCoist said. “Obviously we’ll have to wait and see how this appeal goes. If they didn’t win the appeal, I think people would be looking for a stronger punishment than that.”

City’s official statement, released after the appeal was lodged, was unequivocal in its rejection of the commission’s findings. “The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe,” the statement read. “The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions.”

The case has prompted wider debate across football about the appropriate scale of punishment for financial rule breaches, with discussions ranging from fines and points deductions to relegation and expulsion. No formal sanction has been confirmed, and the outcome of City’s appeal will determine the next stage of proceedings.
