Lorenzi rules out Genesio resignation despite four straight defeats at OM
As resignation rumours surrounded Bruno Genesio following a poor run in Ligue 1, OM sporting director Grégory Lorenzi affirmed that the head coach, contracted until 2028, has no intention of leaving the club.
Grégory Lorenzi dismissed speculation about Bruno Genesio’s departure on Wednesday, insisting that the Olympique de Marseille head coach would remain in post despite a run of four consecutive defeats in Ligue 1 that has left the club in the relegation zone.
When asked by L’Équipe about a possible resignation from the manager, the Marseille sporting director was categorical: “No, not at all. The coach committed to us until 2028, we’re building our project with Bruno and there’s no issue there, plain and simple.”
The situation is nonetheless worrying. After a resounding defeat to Strasbourg (4-0), OM have suffered four league losses in a row, finding themselves in the relegation places before the international break. Genesio has not hidden his frustration, notably pointing to a summer transfer window that yielded no arrivals.
Lorenzi sought to contextualise the head coach’s public statements without downplaying them. “I think we’re all aligned with the coach, the board and myself. Bruno is making an assessment based on what he thinks. Having spoken with him, it’s also his role to say what he feels. But just because we say it in the press doesn’t necessarily mean it will bring anything.”
The sporting director also wanted to dispel any impression of internal tension: “We can understand that he’s frustrated because he feels there’s good content, there’s frustration. That doesn’t mean there are frictions internally. We’re all clear-eyed and it doesn’t call into question the coach’s project at OM.”
The former LOSC head coach, who arrived this summer on the Marseille bench, therefore has the stated backing of his board to turn around an alarming sporting situation when the league resumes.
