Neville brands Manchester United's transfer window 'absolute negligence' after 3-0 Bournemouth collapse

Gary Neville has delivered a scathing verdict on Manchester United's recruitment, arguing the club should have spent £100m on defenders and missed out on Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes due to debt-driven financial constraints.

Gary Neville has accused Manchester United of “absolute negligence” in the transfer market after watching his former club suffer a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday, with goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson exposing deep defensive frailties at Old Trafford.

The result leaves United with just two wins from 12 matches across all competitions this season, dropping them into the bottom five of the Premier League table and piling further pressure on head coach Michael Carrick, who is reported to be on the brink of the sack.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former United captain reserved particular frustration for the club’s failure to sign Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, both of whom impressed for Tottenham Hotspur in a midweek win at Stamford Bridge. “Tottenham have taken the two star midfield players, the two main targets in midfield,” Neville said. “Watching Tonali and Fernandes run a football match — they should be out there in red shirts.”

Neville attributed the missed signings to the financial burden of the club’s debt, arguing that money had been wasted on lesser alternatives. “Manchester United decided not to buy them because they can’t afford them because of the debt and all the other waste of money that’s been spent,” he said. “They’d have been better off signing Tonali and Fernandes rather than signing three midfielders that are okay. Sign two that are better than okay.”

His criticism extended beyond midfield. Neville argued that United were obliged to invest at least £100 million in defensive reinforcements, pointing to a series of positional mismatches and individual errors that have contributed to a deteriorating goals-against record.

“That is absolute negligence to leave that defence out on that pitch,” he said. “Lenny Yoro should not be playing right-back for Manchester United. Diogo Dalot should not be playing left-back for Manchester United. Ayden Heaven is still learning his trade — he should be developing in certain matches, not these type of matches. Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez have been here for years now, five years or more, and still can’t keep clean sheets consistently. So, how could they not bring defenders in? They had to bring defenders in.”

The defeat and Neville’s public broadside reflect a growing sense of crisis at Old Trafford, with players reportedly making public statements of discontent and results continuing to slide.
