Nico Williams reveals he rejected PSG and Arsenal to stay at Bilbao
The Spanish winger for Athletic Bilbao confirmed at a press conference that he declined concrete approaches from PSG and Arsenal, in addition to FC Barcelona, over the past three summer transfer windows, stating he never considered leaving the Basque Country.
Nico Williams has ended the speculation himself: the Athletic Bilbao winger confirmed this weekend at a press conference that he rejected concrete approaches from PSG and Arsenal, in addition to those from FC Barcelona, over the past three summer transfer windows.
“I never doubted wanting to stay here. I received a huge number of offers over the past three summers. It was my decision. Nobody forced my hand. Apart from Barça, I received offers from PSG and Arsenal that I turned down. I am where I want to be. Decisions are made as a family, between my parents and my brother,” said the 22-year-old Spanish international, according to remarks reported by El Chiringuito.
This choice of continuity contrasts with the agitation surrounding his name each summer. Williams, the revelation of Euro 2024 with Spain, was presented as one of the market’s priority targets. His attachment to his academy club and the central role of his family in his decisions ultimately outweighed the sporting and financial projects proposed by the suitors.
On the pitch, however, the start of the 2025-26 season is harder to read. After concluding the previous campaign with six goals and four assists across all competitions, the left winger has scored just one goal in eight matches since the restart. A return below expectations generated by his international performances, which inevitably raises questions about his ability to take another step forward in a more competitive environment.
