Carrick faces United sack as break clause smooths path to Nagelsmann or Howe
Michael Carrick's two-year contract at Manchester United is believed to contain a break clause, with the club already assessing replacements including Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe after winning just twice in 12 matches this season.
Michael Carrick is facing the sack at Manchester United less than three months into the Premier League season, with his two-year contract believed to include a break clause that would allow the club to move quickly on a managerial change.
Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis in May after steering United to third place in the Premier League and back into the Champions League during a second interim spell. But his side have won just twice in their opening 12 matches across all competitions, and a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como last Wednesday accelerated the scrutiny around his position.
According to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, United had already begun assessing potential replacements in the wake of the Como humiliation. Former Germany and Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann and ex-Newcastle manager Eddie Howe are among the names under consideration. Crook reports that United head of recruitment Christopher Vivell is pushing Nagelsmann’s case, while technical director Jason Wilcox is said to favour a candidate with Premier League experience, making Howe his preferred option.
Wilcox’s reported admiration for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has also been noted, though neither is considered a realistic target at this stage.
The mood at Old Trafford turned fractious after Sunday’s loss to Bournemouth, with supporters vocal in their backing for Carrick but pointed in their criticism of captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Lisandro Martinez. The tension had been building since Martinez made public comments critical of Wilcox, and Fernandes openly questioned Carrick’s tactical approach in the days following the Como defeat.
Part-owner Jim Ratcliffe and Wilcox are expected to remain in their roles beyond any managerial change, raising familiar questions about the club’s decision-making cycle. The existence of a break clause, if confirmed, would at least represent a degree of contractual pragmatism from a hierarchy not always associated with forward planning.
