Monaco has decided to write to the technical refereeing department (DTA) to seek explanations following its 1-1 draw conceded away at Strasbourg on Saturday, a result that leaves ASM top of Ligue 1 but deeply frustrated.

Two decisions by referee Éric Wattellier are the focus of Monaco’s anger. The first concerns Strasbourg’s opening goal in the 52nd minute, an own goal by Sadibou Sané from a corner. Monaco believes that a handball by Gessime Yassine preceded the action and that the ball also touched the referee, which should have stopped play.

The second situation, late in the match, concerns a penalty not awarded for contact on Matthis Abline. The striker went down in the box after contact with defender Jeyland Mitchell. Wattellier did not whistle, a decision upheld by VAR.

Head coach Felipe Luis made no attempt to hide his displeasure after the match. “For me, it’s a penalty,” he said. “He tries to tackle the ball but he touches Abline. Of course, it’s difficult for the referee, he can make mistakes, we know that. But I think for this situation, we could at least call him and show him the action.”

Despite the shared point, Monaco remains top of the league. The approach to the DTA aims more to obtain official clarifications than to have the result changed, which remains final.
