Jamie Carragher publicly condemned Alexis Mac Allister for what he called an “embarrassing” attempt to get Arsenal’s Noni Madueke dismissed during Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat at home on Sunday, and demanded coordinated action from the Premier League, managers, and supporters to eradicate the behaviour.

The flashpoint came in the second half when Mac Allister slapped Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard on the back of the head while he was on the ground. Jurrien Timber and Madueke then confronted the Liverpool midfielder, and Mac Allister threw himself dramatically to the floor after minimal contact with Madueke’s forehead. With Madueke already on a yellow card, the stakes were high — but referee Andy Madley was not deceived, booking both Mac Allister and Timber instead. VAR Stuart Attwell supported the decision, stating: “There is some contact as Madueke and Mac Allister square up. In my opinion, it’s not forceful, not violent, not brutal.”

Carragher, speaking after the final whistle, did not hold back. “I’m delighted he didn’t get sent off there,” he said. “We have really got to be strong and start calling people out and say ‘this is embarrassing’. It’s got to stop, it’s ridiculous. I can’t stand it.”

The former Liverpool defender was particularly pointed given his own allegiances. “I’m a Liverpool fan and it’s a joke from Mac Allister, it’s got to stop,” he added. “People are trying to gain an advantage because they know they can, because red cards are getting given for it. Whether it’s from Howard Webb, the Premier League, the managers get together — stop getting red cards for this.”

Gary Neville echoed the sentiment from the co-commentary position. “Mac Allister’s reaction is a bit over the top, I can tell you that. Get up. Embarrassing. It’s Mac Allister’s fault because he slaps Odegaard when he’s down which is unnecessary,” Neville said, while acknowledging that Madueke’s slight forward head movement had created the opportunity for the simulation.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright also called for the laws of the game to be clarified to address these confrontations more decisively, adding his voice to a growing chorus of pundits demanding that the head-to-head simulation tactic be formally legislated out of football.
