Fernandes leads by example but 10-man United crumble to defeat at Chelsea
Bruno Fernandes delivered a captain's performance at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but Lisandro Martinez's red card proved decisive as Manchester United fell to Chelsea, leaving Michael Carrick's position under growing pressure.
Bruno Fernandes produced his most influential display in weeks at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, yet it was not enough to prevent Manchester United from slipping to another damaging Premier League defeat against Chelsea, with Lisandro Martinez’s sending off effectively ending the contest.
The result deepens the pressure on interim manager Michael Carrick, who had spent much of the week managing the fallout from Fernandes’ petulant reaction to the earlier loss to Como. Dropping the captain for the Bournemouth fixture had been a deliberate show of authority, but Carrick drew a line under the episode following clear-the-air talks at Carrington and restored Fernandes to the starting XI at Chelsea.
The decision looked justified in the first half. Fernandes was dogged defensively, chasing back, winning possession and doing the unglamorous work his teammates needed from their skipper. Going forward he was sharper too — he should have scored when Bryan Mbeumo played a sensational cross-field pass to him on the counter, and moments later Mbeumo failed to read Fernandes’ precise cross for what would have been a simple tap-in.
This was the version of Fernandes that has been so critical to United for years: one who influences the game rather than looks for excuses. Even after a difficult start to the second half, it was Fernandes who nearly dragged his side back into it with a brilliant free-kick delivery that Matheus Cunha could not divert goalwards.
However, Martinez’s reckless dismissal changed the shape of the contest entirely, limiting Fernandes’ opportunities to turn the game and leaving United to defend with ten men. Despite the result, his display carried the hallmarks of a senior leader doing his apologising on the pitch — exactly what Carrick had needed to see.
Carrick had been careful in his pre-match comments to reaffirm Fernandes’ standing in the squad. “He’s a big player, Bruno, he offers us so much with his experience,” the United manager said. “He’s been through a lot here and achieved a lot and shown what he can bring to the team. He’s an important part of the team for us.”
With Carrick’s own future at Old Trafford increasingly uncertain, the return of a focused, motivated Fernandes may be among the few encouraging signs from a difficult afternoon in west London. Whether it proves enough to change the trajectory of United’s season remains to be seen.
