Mbappé Accused of Diving After Controversial Penalty Launches Real Madrid
Kylian Mbappé sparked a major controversy in La Liga after winning a disputed penalty in the 11th minute of Real Madrid's 3-0 away victory at Racing Santander on Sunday. Catalan media denounced a dive and accused referees of favoring the capital club.
Kylian Mbappé triggered a fierce controversy in La Liga after winning a contentious penalty in the 11th minute of Real Madrid’s away match at Racing Santander on Sunday, a game the Merengues won 3-0.
The French striker went down in the opposition box after minimal contact from a defender’s arm. The referee awarded the penalty, allowing Real Madrid to open the scoring and launch a victory that brought them to within three points of Barcelona at the top of La Liga. The decision immediately inflamed the Barcelona press, which sees it as evidence of systematic refereeing bias in favor of the capital club.
Mundo Deportivo was the most scathing, describing Mbappé’s gesture as a dive on « imperceptible contact » and condemning « a ridiculous penalty ». The Catalan newspaper mocked the referee’s decision: « The referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Mbappé that only he saw. But since he was also the only one with a whistle, he blew it. » The paper went further by evoking the « dubious maneuvers » typical of Real Madrid, claiming the club « beat Racing with the referee’s help ».
Sport newspaper was blunt in its headline: « Cunning, manipulation and a terrible penalty to launch Madrid. » It describes a Racing Santander whose « game plan was destroyed by Mbappé’s dive », while acknowledging the sporting progress of José Mourinho’s side and conceding that Madrid is improving « in many aspects of its game ».
This controversy comes amid an already tense period for Mbappé, following his second-place finish at the Ballon d’Or and a diplomatic incident with China with significant consequences. La Liga had attempted to ease tensions around the refereeing body by recently introducing a public debrief system for referees. This new affair shows that the climate surrounding Spanish refereeing remains deeply divisive.
