Mac Allister branded 'embarrassing' as VAR spares Madueke in Anfield flashpoint
Alexis Mac Allister was widely criticised after going down dramatically following minimal head contact with Noni Madueke late in Arsenal's 1-0 win at Anfield, with VAR declining to recommend a red card for the already-booked Gunners winger.
Alexis Mac Allister drew sharp criticism for simulation during the closing stages of Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Liverpool at Anfield, after the midfielder went down theatrically following slight head contact with Noni Madueke in a late flashpoint that threatened to overshadow the result.
Kai Havertz’s early strike proved the difference as Mikel Arteta’s side climbed to the top of the Premier League table, recording their first win at Anfield since 2012. Liverpool pressed hard for an equaliser, and tensions spilled over when a scuffle broke out involving Mac Allister and several Arsenal players.
The incident began when Mac Allister appeared to shout at a grounded Martin Odegaard before slapping the back of the Arsenal captain’s head. Jurrien Timber confronted Mac Allister, prompting players from both sides to converge. In the ensuing melee, Mac Allister fell to the ground after minimal contact with Madueke’s head, triggering immediate red card appeals from Liverpool.
Replays showed no aggressive thrust or intent from Madueke, who was already on a yellow card. VAR examined the incident closely before deciding against recommending a red card, leaving referee Madley to take no further action on the head contact. Mac Allister and Timber were each shown yellow cards for their roles in the confrontation.
Gary Neville was unsparing in his assessment of Mac Allister’s reaction. “Mac Allister’s reaction is a bit over the top, I can tell you that. Get up. Embarrassing,” he said. “It’s Mac Allister’s fault because he slaps Odegaard when he’s down which is unnecessary.”
Neville also acknowledged the fine margins involved for Madueke. “A little inch forward can cost you a lot,” he noted, before welcoming the VAR decision. “Well done to VAR because they’ve recognised that Mac Allister going down is embarrassing.”
The result lifts Arsenal above Liverpool on the Premier League table, with the victory at Anfield representing a significant statement of title intent from Arteta’s squad.
