Manchester City sign Mathys Tel for £21.5m from Troyes before sending him straight to Monaco on loan
Manchester City have completed the signing of 19-year-old French forward Mathys Detourbet from sister club Troyes for around £21.5m. The teenager has signed a five-year deal at the Etihad but is expected to join Monaco on loan for the 2025-26 season.
Manchester City have signed teenage forward Mathys Detourbet from City Football Group sister club Troyes for a reported fee of around £21.5m, with the 19-year-old set to immediately head out on loan to Monaco for the coming season.
Detourbet has penned a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, but City are expected to send him to Monaco — who finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season and missed out on European qualification — to gain top-five league experience before integrating him into the first-team picture.
The French forward spent his entire development at Troyes, joining the club’s academy at the age of eight and working his way through to the senior squad. Last season he registered three goals and five assists in 33 appearances, the majority of which came from the bench. Primarily deployed on the left flank, Detourbet is also capable of playing through the middle. He has been capped at youth level by France.
Troyes, who won promotion back to the top flight this season, paid tribute to the teenager on his departure. “Having come through the club’s youth system and deeply attached to its colours, Mathys perfectly embodies the youth development work carried out by ESTAC for many years,” the club said in a statement. “His progression from the Academy to the first team is a source of great pride for the entire club and an example for the young players who are now continuing their journey within the training centre.”
The signing is part of a busy summer of business at the Etihad. City have also agreed a £116m deal for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, with that transfer expected to be completed in the coming days once Anderson — currently on World Cup duty with England — has undergone a medical.
