Leeds United have condemned racist social media abuse directed at defender Jayden Bogle after their 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road on Saturday, with both clubs calling for those responsible to face the strongest possible consequences.

Bogle escaped a booking after planting his studs onto the Achilles of Spurs attacker Mathys Tel during a first-half challenge. On-field referee John Brooks did not penalise the Leeds wing-back, and a lengthy VAR review concluded there was no serious foul play — a decision that drew widespread scrutiny and, it now emerges, sparked a wave of racist abuse online.

“Leeds United Football Club are appalled at the disgusting, racist social media abuse Jayden Bogle suffered following Saturday’s Premier League victory against Tottenham Hotspur,” the club said in a statement on Sunday. “There is no place for racism in football or society. The club will work with the Premier League and relevant authorities to identify the individuals and push for the strongest possible action to be taken against them. Jayden has the full and unconditional support of the club and his team-mates, and we all stand with him at this time. Nobody should ever be subjected to racist abuse.”

Tottenham responded swiftly, saying they were “disgusted” to hear of the abuse. “We have offered Leeds United our support in identifying those responsible and we will pursue every available avenue to ensure they are identified and face the full consequences of their actions,” the club said. The Premier League added that “anybody found guilty of committing discriminatory abuse will face club bans and criminal prosecution.”

Tel required prolonged medical attention on the pitch before being replaced by Dominic Solanke, and Tottenham are understood to be writing to Pro Ref to request an explanation for why Bogle was not shown a red card. Speaking at his post-match press conference, Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi stopped short of directly calling for a red card but expressed frustration with Brooks’ officiating and confirmed the club are awaiting further updates on the severity of Tel’s injury.

After Tel was forced off, Leeds secured all three points through a late goal from Noah Okafor, ending Tottenham’s three-match winning run in the process.
