Kane rules out Premier League return as Barcelona circle and contract talks loom
Harry Kane says the urge to return to England has faded since his £100m move to Bayern Munich in 2023, with the striker focused on extending his stay in Germany despite Barcelona's reported interest ahead of his contract expiry next summer.
Harry Kane has cooled significantly on a return to the Premier League, admitting the ‘itch’ he once felt after leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich in 2023 has largely disappeared — with Barcelona now positioning themselves should his contract talks in Germany stall.
Speaking after collecting the European Golden Shoe, the England captain was candid about his shifting priorities. “When I first left [Spurs in 2023], for sure it was something that I thought I’d definitely be coming back,” Kane said. “That itch isn’t there as much any more. I’m extremely happy here in Munich. It’s opened my eyes to a totally different world of football outside of England.”
The 33-year-old has been in extraordinary form for the Bundesliga side, scoring 146 goals in 147 appearances since his £100m arrival. His prolific output had fuelled speculation that a return to England — and a tilt at Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League scoring record — remained a genuine ambition. Kane’s latest comments suggest otherwise.
His current deal at the Allianz Arena expires next summer, and Barcelona are reported to be monitoring the situation closely. Despite the external noise, Kane struck a relaxed tone over the prospect of fresh terms with Bayern. “We obviously said we wanted to talk after the World Cup and after my holiday,” he said. “Both sides are relaxed, and I’m pretty sure there’ll be some talks this week or next week.”
Kane was equally measured when asked about the Ballon d’Or, an award he is in contention for following a standout 2024-25 campaign. “The Ballon d’Or is as big as it gets from an individual point of view,” he said. “I’ve done what I can do in terms of putting in the performances. It’s now down to votes and other people — stuff I can’t control.”
With his family settled in Munich and Vincent Kompany now at the helm, Kane appears content to let his future resolve itself through negotiation rather than agitation — a notable shift from the player who spent years being linked with an imminent homecoming.
