Robert Mouynet, the last surviving member of France’s 1958 World Cup squad, passed away this week at the age of 96. A defender born in Toulouse, he was the final living witness to France’s first great World Cup adventure.

Formed at Toulouse, with whom he won the French second division championship in 1953, Mouynet later joined Cannes before signing with Olympique Lyonnais between 1955 and 1959. It was in the OL colours that he participated in the World Cup in Sweden. Like six other players in the squad, he did not play a single minute of competition — substitutions were not permitted at the time — and an injury sustained in a collision with his own goalkeeper during an OL-Valenciennes match had further weakened him physically.

Despite this, Mouynet chose to remain with the squad until the end. “There, I played in preparation matches, but that made my injury worse, and I was then asked if I preferred to stay or return to France. I preferred to stay with my teammates,” he confided in April during an interview with L’Équipe.

This generation of French players, led by Raymond Kopa and Roger Piantoni, made history in French football by reaching third place in the Swedish World Cup. The tournament remains etched in memory for Just Fontaine’s 13 goals, a world record that still stands. France was eliminated in the semi-final by Pelé’s Brazil, with a score of 5-2.

“After a while, we were signing postcards every day, because we received letters of encouragement by the hundreds, by the thousands,” Mouynet recalled, speaking of the popular fervour surrounding the team. “Before the semi-final against Brazil, a special plane had been chartered so our wives could join us.”

With the passing of Robert Mouynet, the last direct human link to this founding adventure of French football has faded away.
