Fleetwood stun Arsenal on penalties to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals
League Two Fleetwood Town eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal from the Carabao Cup fourth round, winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw, to join Bradford City in the last eight.
League Two Fleetwood Town produced one of the Carabao Cup’s great upsets, knocking out Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties after a 1-1 draw to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Fleetwood’s victory was among the standout results of the fourth round, which also saw Manchester United exit the competition at the third-round stage following a defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Bradford City, who compete in League One, also secured their spot in the last eight with a 2-0 win over Peterborough United, meaning two lower-league clubs are guaranteed to feature in the quarter-final draw.
Manchester City hosted Brighton in their own fourth-round tie at the Etihad Stadium, looking to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the seventh time in ten years. Pep Guardiola’s side came into the match under pressure after a 2-1 Premier League defeat at Aston Villa on the previous Saturday.
Elsewhere in the fourth round, ties between Bournemouth and Aston Villa, Fulham and Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Brentford, Liverpool and Chelsea, and Everton and Newcastle were all set to determine the remaining quarter-final places.
The draw for the last eight was scheduled to take place approximately one hour after the conclusion of the evening’s matches, with the full field of eight clubs confirmed once all fourth-round results were settled.
