Thompson scores first United goal as £4m Tottenham signing begins to find his feet
Tynan Thompson broke his duck for Manchester United with a composed first-time half-volley against Roma Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday, adding to three assists already recorded since his summer move from Spurs.
Tynan Thompson opened his Manchester United account with a well-taken half-volley against Roma Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League at Leigh Sports Village on Tuesday, though United had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
The 18-year-old winger, signed for £4 million — with a further £4 million in potential add-ons — from Tottenham in the summer, had already registered three assists before the Roma fixture but had yet to score. When the moment arrived, he barely celebrated, remaining composed as teammates mobbed him after a finish that belied his lack of senior experience.
Thompson timed his run into the box intelligently and struck first-time on the half-volley, leaving the Roma goalkeeper with no chance. It was a goal that matched the quality of his all-round display; his work rate and positioning off the ball were among the standout positives on the afternoon.
The winger’s path to Manchester has not been straightforward. He suffered a family bereavement around the time of his move from Spurs, and United’s coaching staff have been mindful of his personal circumstances as he settles into life at Carrington. He has trained with the senior squad on a handful of occasions but has predominantly worked with the Under-21s.
Thompson contributed 13 goals and six assists in 26 appearances for Tottenham last season, a record that underlines his attacking potential. United coaches believe he still needs to sharpen his impact in the final third, but the underlying qualities — pressing intelligence, positioning, and movement — are already visible.
The £4 million in add-ons will only be triggered once he reaches specific milestones with the first team, and there is cautious optimism at the club that a professional debut could come before the end of the season if his development continues on its current trajectory.
In the immediate term, Thompson will continue to feature for the Under-21s in domestic competition and gain European experience through the Under-19 UEFA Youth League, where United still have a chance of reaching the knockout rounds.
