F2 chief confirms one-month decision window on Norris's LN4 Fusion team bid
FIA Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel says the championship will announce its team selection for the 2027–2029 cycle within six weeks, with Lando Norris's newly launched LN4 Fusion among the applicants competing for a limited number of grid slots.
Lando Norris will learn within roughly six weeks whether his fledgling LN4 Fusion outfit has secured a place on the Formula 2 grid, after FIA F2 CEO Bruno Michel confirmed the championship is deep into its triennial team-selection process.
“We’re in the process of this selection at the moment, so we will come up with a list of teams within one month, I would say, one month and a half,” Michel said. “So, it’s going to be quite soon.”
Norris launched LN4 Fusion in early September, building on the assets of AIX Racing and immediately filing for an F2 licence. The team already holds a Formula 3 entry through the end of 2027, with Gabriel Gomez and James Egozi confirmed as drivers for that campaign.
Michel made clear that competition for the available slots is fierce. “There are a lot of teams that would like to join Formula 2 at the moment,” he said, adding that the championship has no intention of expanding its grid. “We’re not going to increase the number of teams because that’s something that is quite important for the health of the teams. We’ll keep the same number of teams.”
The CEO also drew a deliberate parallel between the 22-car F2 field and the current size of the F1 grid, arguing that maintaining parity helps calibrate how many drivers can realistically expect to graduate to the top tier in any given season.
Norris has been candid about the motivation behind the venture. “I’ve been really lucky to have some amazing people around me throughout my career, and I know that getting to Formula 1 takes so much more than just talent,” he said at the team’s launch. “You need the right people around you, the right support and the right opportunities at the right time.”
The McLaren driver, who made his own junior career breakthrough in F2, described the personal significance of the project. “Having your name written down somewhere, especially for a good reason, is something to be very proud about,” he said.
Norris currently sits sixth in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings on 201 points, with the United States Grand Prix in Austin — scheduled for 23–25 October — his next on-track commitment while the off-track verdict on LN4 Fusion’s F2 future draws closer.
