McLaren CEO Zak Brown issued his starkest possible warning to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri following their collision on the final lap of the Singapore Grand Prix sprint, telling the pair that avoiding a repeat was “an order” — and that “we didn’t say please.”

The incident unfolded as the two McLaren team-mates battled for fourth at Turn 5, where reigning champion Norris dived up the inside of Piastri. The move sent both cars spinning, forcing Piastri to retire while Norris recovered to eighth. The stewards took no further action.

“That was a ‘don’t do that again’,” Brown said. “It was an unnecessary result for the team when a lot of pressure is on, and we’re trying to catch Ferrari and Red Bull’s not far behind.”

Team principal Andrea Stella struck a more measured tone, saying the internal conversations were still ongoing but were focused less on apportioning blame and more on collective responsibility. “The interesting bit is a reflection that all the stakeholders, the team, the drivers will have to make around leading together the team, embracing constantly from inside the cockpit the interest of the team as something that is superior to any particular singular individual interest,” Stella said.

Norris initially defended the move in the immediate aftermath of the sprint, arguing he had the right to go for a gap. By Sunday evening, however, his position had shifted significantly. “I can’t attempt what I did, I should never have attempted it in the first place, even if the move was on,” he said. “I simply have to think more about the team that I represent more than myself. It was a mistake on my part, I let down the team. I’ve also apologised to all of them and I owe them all an apology and we’ll do better next time.”

Norris finished the grand prix in fourth, with Piastri crossing the line fifth — a result that underlines just how costly the sprint incident was in the context of the constructors’ championship. Red Bull are now just seven points behind McLaren, adding urgency to Brown’s message that internal squabbles cannot be afforded at this stage of the season.
