Carrick's position at Manchester United in serious doubt after third loss in four matches
Michael Carrick is under mounting pressure at Manchester United after Bournemouth beat the Red Devils at Old Trafford, extending their winless run to eight consecutive matches and leaving them closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
Michael Carrick’s tenure as Manchester United manager is hanging by a thread after Bournemouth comfortably defeated the Red Devils at Old Trafford, a result that stretches United’s winless run to eight consecutive matches and leaves them closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
The defeat was United’s third in four matches and came just days after a catastrophic 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League — a result that had already intensified scrutiny on Carrick’s methods and decision-making.
In his pre-match press conference, Carrick had attempted to galvanise his squad with a five-minute address invoking the names of Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Alex Ferguson and Ryan Giggs. He also made the bold call to drop captain Bruno Fernandes to the bench, a direct response to the Portuguese midfielder’s public criticism of Carrick’s tactical approach.
The decision backfired. Bournemouth took control in the first half through goals from Rayan and Marcus Tavernier, and when Carrick turned to Joshua Zirkzee rather than Fernandes from the bench, the visitors responded by adding a third shortly after the substitution.
The manner of the defeat — at home, against a mid-table side, with a statement selection that yielded no dividend — will only deepen concerns among the United hierarchy about whether Carrick can arrest the club’s slide. With the team adrift in the table and a dressing room that appears fractured, the pressure on the manager has rarely been greater.
