Bournemouth thrash 10-game winless Manchester United 3-0 to deepen Carrick's crisis
Manchester United's winless run stretched to eight games as Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday, with goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson leaving manager Michael Carrick under severe pressure.
Manchester United suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, extending their winless run to eight Premier League games and intensifying the scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick.
The result arrived just days after United were beaten 4-1 by Champions League debutants Como in midweek — a performance widely described as lifeless and lethargic. Carrick needed a response, and he made a pointed selection statement by dropping captain Bruno Fernandes to the bench following the midfielder’s public criticism of his tactical approach.
The gamble did not pay off. United were 2-0 down at half-time, with Rayan and Marcus Tavernier both scoring for the visitors in a first half that offered the hosts almost nothing in attack. Evanilson added a third early in the second period to complete a comfortable afternoon for Bournemouth and a deeply uncomfortable one for Carrick.
The back-to-back heavy defeats have sharpened questions about Carrick’s future at Old Trafford. He arrived with credit from a promising previous campaign, but the performances this season have been consistently poor, and the gap between United and the top of the table continues to grow.
Fernandes’s omission from the starting lineup drew as much attention as the result itself. The Portuguese captain had spoken openly about his frustrations with the team’s style of play, and Carrick’s decision to leave him out signalled a willingness to assert authority — though the outcome on the pitch did little to reinforce that message.
United now face a pivotal period in their schedule with confidence at a low ebb and no obvious sign of the tactical or collective improvement that would ease the pressure on their manager.
