Manchester United welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford in the Premier League with manager Michael Carrick fighting to keep his job and the club no closer to identifying a successor should they decide to act.

Carrick’s position appeared increasingly precarious after a run of nine games without a win that included heavy defeats at Bournemouth and Chelsea, but a comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday bought him a measure of breathing room heading into what could be a defining fixture before the international break.

The Independent has reported that interest in Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann — previously considered the two frontrunners to replace Carrick — has cooled significantly, leaving United in a state of indecision. Sources indicate that no one within the club has been willing to make a definitive call on the manager’s future, a situation made worse by the fact that United have “little idea” who they would turn to if they did pull the trigger.

Among the other names considered, Sebastian Hoeness is highly rated but his appointment would represent a significant leap from Stuttgart. Fabian Hurzeler is another option, though there are doubts over whether United could afford his compensation and whether he could replicate his Brighton work in a higher-pressure environment. Cesc Fabregas has impressed at Como but is not expected to leave, and is widely viewed as the long-term successor to Mikel Arteta at Arsenal rather than a realistic United target.

Aston Villa arrive at Old Trafford in strong form, unbeaten in five Premier League games under Unai Emery, who himself appears set to remain at Villa Park rather than pursue a move to United. Striker Nicolas Jackson has scored five goals in his last five appearances and will pose a significant threat to a United defence that has struggled for consistency all season.

For Carrick, a result against Emery’s side would represent back-to-back wins and could strengthen his case for survival. A defeat, however, would intensify the pressure on a club that has already endured a turbulent start to the campaign and has yet to settle on a clear direction — either with the current manager or without him.
