Brighton demolish 10-man Coventry 5-0 to leave Sky Blues pointless and goalless after four games

Brighton handed Coventry a 5-0 thrashing at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday, leaving the Sky Blues as the only Premier League side yet to register a point or a goal after four matches this season. Charalampos Kostoulas, Malick Yalcouye, Pascal Gross, Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari all got on the scoresheet for the Seagulls.

An entertaining first half produced 21 shots in total — the highest tally in the opening 45 minutes of any Premier League fixture so far this campaign — but it was Brighton who made the breakthrough. Kostoulas latched onto a header from Gross in the 35th minute, took a couple of neat touches, and fired a low, hard shot into the bottom left corner for his first league goal since January.

Coventry’s afternoon unravelled rapidly after the interval. Yalcouye doubled the lead just six minutes into the second half, beating two defenders before slotting past Carl Rushworth. Moments later, Taiwo Awoniyi was dismissed after referee Tony Harrington judged a flailing elbow on Maxim De Cuyper to be worthy of a straight red card.

With the numerical advantage, Brighton moved through the gears to complete the rout. Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas in the area, and Gross converted the resulting penalty for the third. Dunk then decided to let fly from 25 yards, his strike flying into the top left corner. Ayari rounded off the scoring to cap a five-star display from the visitors.

Coventry had shown glimpses of intent in the first half — Ephron Mason-Clark forced a save from Bart Verbruggen, Jack Rudoni skimmed the crossbar with a header, and Rudoni and Frank Onyeka both tested the Brighton goalkeeper with volleys — but the Sky Blues could not convert their moments into anything tangible.

The result leaves Coventry rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, still searching for their first point and first goal of the new campaign.
