BBC reportedly developing documentary on Hamilton and Alonso's explosive 2007 McLaren season
Former Spanish F1 commentator Antonio Lobato claims the BBC is producing a documentary about Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso's turbulent 2007 season at McLaren, which ended with both drivers tied on points and the team stripped of its constructors' title over Spygate.
The BBC is reportedly developing a documentary about one of Formula 1’s most chaotic seasons — the 2007 McLaren campaign that pitted Lewis Hamilton against Fernando Alonso and ended in espionage scandal. The claim comes from Antonio Lobato, a former Spanish F1 commentator who covered Alonso throughout his peak years, speaking on the SoyMotor.com Twitch channel. The BBC has not confirmed the project.
“I know the BBC is preparing a documentary,” Lobato said. “It will definitely be told. The question is… what will be told?”
Lobato revealed he was invited to participate but declined. “I don’t want to get involved in those stories. I know what I lived through, I know what happened, perhaps from my point of view, which may also be a bit distorted, and when the documentary comes out, I’d like to watch it.” He added that other journalists who were present during that season have agreed to take part.
The 2007 season remains one of the most extraordinary in championship history. Alonso arrived at McLaren as the reigning two-time world champion, having won back-to-back titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006. Hamilton, making his F1 debut, matched him stride for stride throughout the year. The tension between the two escalated steadily before boiling over entirely — culminating in both drivers finishing level on 109 points, a single point behind Kimi Räikkönen, who claimed the title.
The season was further overshadowed by the Spygate affair, in which McLaren was found to have possessed confidential Ferrari technical data. The team was excluded from the constructors’ championship and fined $100 million. Alonso departed at the end of the year to return to Renault.
Nearly two decades on, both drivers remain on the grid. Hamilton, now at Ferrari in his first season with the Scuderia, sits third in the 2026 drivers’ standings with 229 points. Alonso, competing for Aston Martin, has managed just seven points and is enduring a difficult campaign by his standards. Both will race at the United States Grand Prix in Austin from 23 to 25 October.
