Awakened from coma, Yael Trepy regains consciousness after near-drowning
French striker Yael Trepy of Cagliari has been brought out of an induced coma on Tuesday evening. Hospitalized in intensive care since Sunday after losing consciousness in a swimming pool in Sardinia, the 20-year-old player shows no neurological deficit.
Yael Trepy regained consciousness on Tuesday evening at Sassari’s Santissima Annunziata civil hospital in Sardinia, two days after nearly drowning in a private swimming pool. Cagliari confirmed the news in an official medical bulletin.
The 20-year-old French striker had lost consciousness in the deep end of a villa’s swimming pool where he was with relatives on Sunday in northeastern Sardinia. Quickly airlifted, he had been placed in an induced coma in intensive care, sparking serious concern within the Serie A club.
The medical bulletin released Tuesday evening offered reassurance: “Upon waking, the patient has fully regained consciousness: he is alert and cooperative and currently shows no obvious neurological deficit. His respiratory and hemodynamic status is stable.”
Despite these encouraging signs, Trepy remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Doctors justify his continued admission by the pulmonary complications linked to the accident: “Given the recent extubation and pulmonary condition resulting from aspiration syndrome, the patient remains hospitalized, where he continues to receive close clinical and respiratory monitoring.”
The player will almost certainly miss the resumption of the Italian championship this weekend. Cagliari travel to Parma on Saturday evening for the opening day of Serie A.
