A 33-year-old man was found dead Tuesday morning in the stands of The Valley, the home of Charlton Athletic, a Championship club based in southeast London. Alerted to the presence of an unconscious body, the Metropolitan Police confirmed the death upon arrival at the scene.
The victim’s identity has not been made public. According to several British media outlets, investigators are currently favoring the theory of an accidental fall, without ruling out other hypotheses as the investigation continues.
Charlton Athletic responded with an official statement, extending “its deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time.” The club specified its intention “to cooperate with the authorities as part of their investigation” and requested that “the privacy of those involved be respected.”
The club also sought to rule out any responsibility on its part: “Nothing suggests any fault on the part of the club,” the statement indicates, which also commends the “professionalism” of staff in the face of “a particularly difficult and distressing situation.”
Charlton had begun its Championship season the previous weekend with a home victory over Derby County (2-1).
