Liverpool in talks to sell Curtis Jones to Inter Milan for around £30m
Liverpool and Inter Milan have reopened negotiations over a move for Curtis Jones, with the Italian champions resuming their pursuit after a £21.4m bid was rejected in June. The 24-year-old enters the final year of his contract, leaving Liverpool at risk of losing him for free.
Liverpool are in active negotiations with Inter Milan over the sale of Curtis Jones, with the two clubs working towards a fee of around €35m (£30m) for the England international midfielder.
Inter first registered their interest in Jones at the end of the January transfer window before returning in June with a €25m (£21.4m) offer, which Liverpool rejected. The Merseyside club valued the 25-year-old closer to €40m (£34.2m), but with Jones entering the final year of his contract, they now face the prospect of losing him on a free transfer if a deal is not concluded within the next few weeks.
The figure of €35m has emerged as a likely compromise — the same amount Inter recently paid Tottenham for Djed Spence — and dialogue between the clubs is described as ongoing.
Jones has made 228 appearances for Liverpool, including 49 last season, but found himself deployed at right-back towards the end of the campaign and struggled to nail down a starting role in his preferred central midfield position. New head coach Andoni Iraola has appeared to favour a midfield partnership of Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai during pre-season, and Jones was visibly frustrated during a friendly against Wrexham when Szoboszlai did not hand him the captain’s armband upon being substituted.
The combination of a contracting role under Iraola, a contract situation that strips Liverpool of their leverage, and Inter’s persistent interest has brought the two clubs back to the table. Whether they can bridge the remaining gap in valuation before the transfer window closes will determine whether Jones makes the move to San Siro this summer.
