Aston Villa sign Zion Suzuki for £30m as Martinez's future grows increasingly uncertain
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma in a deal worth up to £30 million, deepening uncertainty over long-serving first choice Emiliano Martinez ahead of the new Premier League season.
Aston Villa have signed United States-born Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma in a deal worth up to 35 million euros (£30 million), raising serious questions about the long-term future of Argentina World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez at the club.
Suzuki, 23, represented Japan at this summer’s World Cup, where he produced a memorable save onto the post from Vinicius Jr during their group-stage draw with Brazil. He began his European career at Belgian side Sint-Truiden in 2023 before joining Parma the following year, and was a key figure as Japan eased through their World Cup group by beating Tunisia and Sweden and drawing 2-2 with the Netherlands. Japan were ultimately eliminated in the round of 32 by Brazil, with Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli scoring a late winner.
Martinez, who has been Villa’s undisputed first choice for six years, has come close to leaving the club in each of the past two summers. Juventus were heavily linked with the 32-year-old in recent weeks, and he was notably absent from Villa’s UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. However, the Italian club have since shifted their attention to Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario on a season-long loan, leaving Martinez’s situation unresolved.
Suzuki’s arrival is the latest piece of business in what has been a busy summer at Villa Park. Following Lucas Digne’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain, the club moved quickly to sign left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old Italian, who previously won the Europa League with Atalanta, will compete with Ian Maatsen for the starting berth on the left side of defence.
Villa head into the new campaign on the back of a strong 2024-25 season, having won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League to secure Champions League football. The squad has not been without its losses, however, with Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans among the notable departures.
Villa open their Premier League campaign away at Brighton on Sunday.
