Genesio defends Balerdi after being booed before season even starts
Two days before the opening match against Strasbourg, Bruno Genesio defended Leonardo Balerdi, who was targeted by whistles during a friendly match, and called on Marseille supporters to back their players.
Bruno Genesio publicly defended Leonardo Balerdi at his Wednesday press conference, 48 hours before hosting Strasbourg in Ligue 1’s opening day (Friday, 20:45).
The Argentine defender had been booed by part of the crowd during the friendly against Atlético de Madrid, a reaction that clearly affected the Marseille coach. “Leo has suffered greatly from what happened to him, but we are here to help him,” Genesio said, noting that he exchanges “regularly” with him to offer support.
The manager also placed the situation in its sporting context, highlighting the fragility of the defensive sector before the season kicks off. “We are in an uncertain situation in that area of play. With injuries and possible departures, there are very few solutions.” An implicit message to supporters: booing a player the team cannot afford to lose further destabilizes an already pressured group.
“My job is to build the best possible team for Friday,” he insisted. “Leo cannot overcome difficulties alone, he needs us. Against Atlético, it was quite a difficult moment and we all suffered for him. We are together every day, so it hurts us too.”
Genesio had already made headlines this summer by publicly disagreeing with the board’s decision to strip the captain’s armband from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Wednesday’s press conference gave him the chance to revisit that episode, confirming an assumed commitment to transparency, even when it exposes internal tensions.
On the atmosphere expected Friday at the Vélodrome, the coach was clear-eyed without dodging the question. “Our supporter groups will be there to back us. After that, if there are criticisms or whistles, that’s part of our job.”
