Arsenal face PSG, Liverpool and Chelsea in race to sign Bouaddi after Morocco's World Cup opener
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta held talks with Ayyoub Bouaddi's representatives over six months ago, but PSG, Liverpool and Chelsea have also registered interest in the 18-year-old Lille midfielder after his commanding display against Brazil.
Arsenal are facing a three-way battle from PSG, Liverpool and Chelsea to sign Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, whose composed performance in Morocco’s World Cup Group C opener against Brazil at MetLife Stadium on Saturday has accelerated interest from Europe’s biggest clubs.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is understood to have already held talks with Bouaddi’s representatives — conversations that took place more than six months ago, well before the 18-year-old announced himself on the global stage. The Gunners, who are actively targeting a midfielder capable of operating as both a No.8 and No.6, are considered well-placed to move quickly, though the competition is formidable.
Bouaddi, who chose to represent Morocco internationally despite captaining France’s Under-21s as recently as this year, was one of the standout performers in a fiercely contested group-stage clash. While Brazil’s Casemiro laboured in the New Jersey heat, the teenager displayed maturity, positional discipline and technical quality beyond his years — holding shape when Morocco pushed forward and marshalling his side through a difficult second half as the Selecao pressed for a breakthrough.
Lille president Olivier Letang has signalled a willingness to negotiate, telling French television: “Ayyoub extended his contract until 2029, so he has three years left. He’s 18 years old.” The club were already seeking up to £60 million before the tournament began, and that figure is expected to rise following his eye-catching World Cup debut.
For Arsenal, the appeal is clear. Bouaddi would offer both an immediate contribution and a long-term asset in a squad already built around established names such as Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi — two players he could learn from directly. Alternative midfield targets carry complications: West Ham’s £80 million valuation of Mateus Fernandes is considered excessive, while Newcastle are expected to demand a steep price for Sandro Tonali.
Whether Arsenal can convert their early groundwork into a concrete offer — and fend off three well-resourced rivals — will likely define one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer battles.
