Yirenkyi snatches victory for Ghana against Panama in 95th minute
Ghana secured their first win at the 2026 World Cup by beating Panama (1-0) thanks to a goal from Caleb Yirenkyi, midfielder for Nordsjaelland, scored in stoppage time on June 17.
Ghana beat Panama (1-0) in extra time at the 2026 World Cup, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring the only goal of the match in the 95th minute. The match, played on the night of June 17 under the direction of Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg, looked set for a draw for much of the contest.
The Nordsjaelland midfielder, who started in the 4-4-1-1 formation deployed by Carlos Queiroz, rescued the Black Stars at the end of a match poor in chances and intensity. Panama, lined up in a 3-4-3 by Thomas Christiansen, failed to trouble the Ghana defence enough to hope for a result.
This hard-fought victory gives Ghana a precious start in the competition. The three points snatched at the last moment could prove decisive in the race for qualification to the next phase of the tournament.
