Argentinian referee Yael Falcon has been confirmed to officiate Czech Republic’s must-win World Cup 2026 Group A match against Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm local time (2am UK time).

Falcon, 37, will be taking charge of his second game of the tournament. Despite only beginning his refereeing career in 2017, he has risen quickly through the ranks, most recently overseeing the Torneo Apertura final in Argentina, where Belgrano defeated River Plate 3-2 to claim the title. His previous World Cup assignment was Sweden’s 5-1 victory over Tunisia.

Two fellow Argentinians will serve as his assistants on the lines: Maximilliano Del Yesso and Facundo Rodriguez. Chilean officials Cristian Garay and Jose Retamal will fill the roles of fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively. VAR appointments for the match had not been announced at the time of writing.

The stakes could hardly be more different for the two sides. Mexico, as co-hosts, have not only secured their place in the round of 32 but are already confirmed as Group A winners, giving them the freedom to rotate and manage their squad. The Czech Republic, by contrast, face a far more precarious situation — only a victory is realistically likely to be enough to see them through to the knockout stage alongside their opponents.
