World Cup 2026 sets single-day attendance record as ticket price row rumbles on
A crowd of 281,223 fans attended four World Cup matches on 16 June 2026, breaking the previous single-day record of 277,070 set in the United States on 28 June 1994. The milestone arrives as Fifa continues to face criticism over ticket pricing, including a public rebuke from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
A record 281,223 fans packed into stadiums across the United States on 16 June 2026 to watch four World Cup fixtures, surpassing the previous single-day attendance mark of 277,070 set at the 1994 tournament 32 years ago.
The record-breaking day featured France vs Senegal, Argentina vs Algeria, Austria vs Jordan, and Iraq vs Norway played across multiple US venues. Argentina, France, and Norway all won their opening matches, with Lionel Messi contributing a hat-trick and Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland each scoring twice.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino hailed the milestone on social media, writing: “Wow! 281,223 fans in Fifa World Cup stadiums today — the highest attended day in the history of the competition! 16 June 2026 will go down in Fifa World Cup history!”
With 1,309,652 spectators attending across the first six days, the tournament is on course to surpass the 1994 cumulative record of 3.5 million, according to Fifa.
The record comes, however, against a backdrop of sustained criticism over ticket pricing. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly urged Fifa not to “rip off” fans ahead of the tournament, telling The Sun: “Football fans should come first. It is unacceptable for fans to be exploited for wanting to support their country on the biggest stage.”
Empty seats were visible at several early matches, including South Korea vs Czechia on the opening day in Guadalajara. Fifa responded by claiming that some ticketed supporters had chosen to watch from the stadium concourses rather than their assigned seats — a defence that drew further scepticism from critics.
The governing body has not addressed the pricing controversy directly in its attendance announcement, instead emphasising the tournament’s inclusivity and global appeal.
