World Cup 2026 final set for New Jersey on July 19 as 39-day tournament nears its climax
The 2026 FIFA World Cup concludes with the final in New Jersey on Sunday, July 19, making it the longest edition in history at 39 days — a full week longer than recent tournaments. The expanded 104-game format includes a new last-32 knockout round.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup final takes place on Sunday, July 19 in New Jersey, bringing to a close the longest edition of the tournament in history. At 39 days from start to finish — seven days longer than recent editions — the expanded format has reshaped the competition’s entire calendar.
The tournament opened on Thursday, June 11 with co-hosts Mexico defeating South Africa 2-0 at Estadio Azteca, the first of 72 group-stage matches spread across 12 groups and 17 days. With 104 games in total, the group stage concludes in the early hours of Sunday morning before the knockout rounds begin less than 24 hours later.
One of the most significant structural changes in this edition is the introduction of a last-32 round. Rather than advancing directly to the last 16, group-stage qualifiers must first navigate an additional knockout fixture. As a result, both finalists will have played eight games in total to lift the trophy.
The last-32 matches run from Sunday, June 28 through to the early hours of Saturday, July 4, followed by the last 16 between July 4 and July 7. The quarter-finals are scheduled for July 9 to July 11, at which point the tournament shifts entirely to venues in the United States, with Canada and Mexico’s hosting duties complete.
The semi-finals are set for Tuesday, July 14 in Dallas and Wednesday, July 15 in Atlanta, both with 8pm kick-offs. The third-place play-off follows on Saturday, July 18 in Miami, before the final the next day in New Jersey rounds out what is already the most expansive World Cup ever staged.
