Willock's late flick rescues Newcastle from Carabao Cup shock at Millwall

Joe Willock spared Newcastle a Carabao Cup embarrassment on Tuesday, flicking home Lewis Hall’s low cross in the 81st minute to seal a nervy 1-0 win at Championship side Millwall and send the Premier League club into the fourth round.

The Magpies had been seconds away from conceding when substitute Tairyk Arconte escaped Tino Livramento and drove a shot against the near post in the 79th minute. Having survived that scare, Newcastle finally found the breakthrough they had struggled to create, with Hall’s delivery across the six-yard box turned in by Willock at the back post.

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle had already turned to Anthony Elanga and deadline-day signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo in search of a goal, but it was the experienced Willock who provided the decisive moment. Millwall’s evening ended on a historic note of their own as 15-year-old midfielder Regan Anderson came off the bench to become the club’s second youngest player, though the Lions could not find an equaliser.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace cruised into the next round with a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough at Selhurst Park. Jorgen Strand Larsen headed home in each half before substitute Daichi Kamada lobbed keeper Sol Brynn for the third, Palace taking their chances clinically despite Boro dominating large spells of the tie.

Bournemouth recorded a 4-0 victory over Lincoln to hand new manager Marco Rose his first win in charge. Ryan Christie was the star of the show, completing a hat-trick with goals in the seventh, 69th and 88th minutes — his second career treble — before Rayan added a fourth from the bench in stoppage time.

Sunderland edged past Hull 1-0 at the Stadium of Light, with Chemsdine Talbi’s chipped finish 71 minutes in separating the two sides in a match that saw both managers ring the changes heavily. Regis Le Bris made 11 alterations from the weekend draw with Brentford, while Sergej Jakirovic switched eight players from Hull’s goalless stalemate against Aston Villa.

League One side Bradford completed the round’s results by beating Leyton Orient 3-1. Will Swan, Stephen Humphrys and Nick Powell all scored for the hosts, with a Macaulay Gillesphey own goal providing Orient’s only response.
