Seven free-agent managers who could replace Carrick at Manchester United
Michael Carrick's tenure at Manchester United appears to be nearing its end after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth followed a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. The club could turn to a pool of available coaches, including Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, and Julian Nagelsmann.
Michael Carrick is facing the sack at Manchester United after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday compounded a humiliating 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, leaving the club languishing near the bottom of the Premier League table. Chants of “sacked in the morning” rang out from the travelling Bournemouth supporters at Old Trafford.
Carrick was handed the permanent manager’s role in the summer after guiding United to third place in the previous Premier League season, receiving £153 million for transfers — funds directed largely at midfield reinforcements. The investment has yet to yield results, with United outplayed in both recent defeats and the 45-year-old widely expected to have taken charge of his final match at the club.
Should Carrick be dismissed, an interim appointment — potentially former United midfielder Darren Fletcher — could bridge the gap before the club pursues a permanent successor. Several high-profile coaches are currently without a club.
Eddie Howe is considered a leading candidate. The former Newcastle manager departed St James’ Park in July after nearly five years in charge, during which he delivered Champions League football and the Carabao Cup in 2025. His earlier work at Bournemouth, where he won the Championship title in 2015 and secured Premier League promotion, further underlines his credentials.
Antonio Conte has publicly acknowledged the possibility of taking charge at United. The Italian left Napoli in June following their 2024/25 Serie A title triumph — his fifth league title in Italy — and previously won the Premier League and FA Cup during his time at Chelsea. In a statement released earlier this month, Conte said he remains open to future projects but is not in negotiations with United or any other club.
Julian Nagelsmann stepped down as Germany head coach following a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign and is also available. The 37-year-old made his name at Hoffenheim, becoming the youngest manager in Bundesliga history, before taking RB Leipzig to the Champions League semi-finals and subsequently managing Bayern Munich.
With pressure mounting and results deteriorating, United’s board faces a decision that will define the direction of the club’s season.
