Whittaker stuns light heavyweight division with brutal KO of Krylov at UFC 329
Robert Whittaker made an emphatic light heavyweight debut at UFC 329, stopping Nikita Krylov at 1:01 of the third round with a series of devastating right hands that may have broken the Russian's jaw.
Robert Whittaker announced himself at light heavyweight in emphatic fashion, knocking out Nikita Krylov at 1:01 of the third round at UFC 329 on Saturday — a finish so violent that Krylov immediately clutched his jaw, which may have been broken by the decisive blow.
Despite conceding significant size to Krylov, Whittaker’s hand speed was the defining factor from the opening bell. He landed sharp, lightning-quick punches throughout the first round that kept the larger man honest, even as Krylov attempted to use his physical advantage by muscling Whittaker against the cage and hunting for takedowns.
The former middleweight champion weathered that grappling pressure and began to find his range in the second round, uncorking blistering combinations that visibly hurt Krylov on multiple occasions. The Russian absorbed the punishment without going down, but the cumulative damage was taking its toll.
The end arrived in the third when Whittaker clipped Krylov with a stiff right hand and immediately followed with another crushing shot. Krylov grabbed at his jaw and waved off the contest himself as the referee stepped in to confirm the stoppage.
“Feast your eyes on that Reddit!” Whittaker said after the win. “Honestly, there was a lot of nerves and we’ve seen guys move up and slide down … but we’ve still got it. I trained for the entire camp with the idea that my opponent is going to be the boogeyman.”
Whittaker was equally direct about his intentions at 205 pounds. “I came in nice and heavy and I hit as hard as anybody else,” he said. “This is my home now. The middleweight page is closed.”
The performance raises immediate questions about where Whittaker fits in the light heavyweight picture. The division is not considered the deepest in the sport, and on this evidence the 29-year-old — a former two-time middleweight title challenger — could already rank among its most dangerous fighters.
