Olympic champion Gable Steveson stops Ellison in first round to announce UFC arrival
Gable Steveson, the Olympic wrestling gold medalist, made an explosive UFC debut at UFC 329 on Saturday, finishing Elisha Ellison with a first-round knockout at 2:31 to move to 4-0 in his professional career.
Gable Steveson announced himself to the UFC heavyweight division in emphatic fashion at UFC 329, stopping Elisha Ellison via first-round knockout at 2:31 to improve to 4-0 as a professional and 1-0 in the octagon.
The 26-year-old Olympic wrestling gold medalist showed far more than his grappling credentials in the opening exchanges, trading heavy shots with Ellison and mixing in a variety of kicks — including knee-level strikes drilled into him by coach Jon Jones — before shooting for his first takedown of the night. Ellison responded with a guillotine choke attempt that briefly forced Steveson to abandon his wrestling instincts and reset on the feet.
After a pause in the action caused by a low blow, Steveson shifted into a higher gear. He blasted Ellison with a brutal left hand and followed with several knees up the middle. Ellison answered with an elbow that momentarily pushed Steveson back, but the two-time NCAA champion regrouped quickly and returned with another explosive left hand that visibly rattled his opponent. From there, Steveson unleashed a relentless succession of strikes until Ellison crumbled to the canvas, where one final punch sealed the stoppage.
“I’m honored to be here, thank you,” Steveson said in his post-fight interview. “It’s fun. It’s a big stage. Time will tell [what’s next for me], I’m a great athlete, I’m a great person. Time will tell that story.”
Steveson had shot for only a single takedown across the entire fight, a telling sign that his striking is already a credible weapon at the highest level. The performance reinforced his status as one of the most decorated athletes to join the UFC roster and, according to those around the promotion, potentially the most exciting heavyweight prospect since Jones himself entered the division.
