Olympic gold medallist Gable Steveson makes UFC debut against heavy underdog Ellison at UFC 329
Gable Steveson, a 2020 Tokyo Olympic wrestling champion and three-time unbeaten MMA prospect, steps into the UFC octagon for the first time at UFC 329 in Las Vegas against Elisha Ellison, who enters as a 9-to-1 underdog.
Gable Steveson, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic wrestling gold medallist and one of the most decorated prospects to enter the UFC in recent years, makes his promotional debut on the preliminary card of UFC 329 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, facing heavyweight Elisha Ellison.
Steveson arrives in the octagon with a 3-0 professional MMA record and a reputation built on dominance. The 26-year-old won back-to-back NCAA Division-I championships before claiming Olympic gold in Tokyo, and has since added a Dirty Boxing victory to his résumé. All three of his MMA opponents have been stopped inside the first round. Most recently, Steveson returned to competitive wrestling at an RAF event, recording a dominant technical fall victory over former UFC fighter Alexandr Romanov — a result that underlined his continued elite-level grappling credentials.
Ellison, meanwhile, enters with a 5-2 record and little to lose. His UFC debut in September lasted under two minutes, ending in a knockout defeat to Brando Pericic. He is listed as a 9-to-1 underdog, making him one of the longest shots in recent UFC history.
The contrast in profiles makes this one of the more lopsided matchups on the card, yet Ellison’s willingness to accept the assignment against such a high-profile debutant adds its own narrative weight. For Steveson, the fight represents the first real test of whether his extraordinary wrestling pedigree can translate into sustained UFC success at heavyweight — a division that has historically humbled even the most celebrated combat sports crossovers.
How Steveson manages the transition from dominant prospect to UFC-calibre competition will be the defining question of his debut.
