Volkanovski ends Evloev's unbeaten run with second-round stoppage to defend UFC featherweight title
Alexander Volkanovski retained the UFC featherweight championship at UFC 333, stopping an undefeated Movsar Evloev in the second round with a barrage of ground shots after dropping him with a blistering left hand.
Alexander Volkanovski defended the UFC featherweight title at UFC 333 on Saturday, stopping an undefeated Movsar Evloev at 4:54 of the second round to record his third consecutive victory in championship fights.
Volkanovski controlled the majority of the contest on the feet, neutralising Evloev’s persistent takedown attempts with sharp defensive wrestling before breaking the challenger down with precise combinations. The finish came late in round two when a blistering left hand dropped Evloev, and Volkanovski immediately swarmed with a flurry of ground shots until the referee intervened.
“He’s a great fighter,” Volkanovski said after the stoppage. “He was undefeated for a reason but I just said I’m the right guy for that job. I knew the ref would have to stop it when he covered up like that.”
The Australian champion was composed throughout, opening the fight with inside leg kicks and stiff jabs before repeatedly shutting down Evloev’s grappling. Evloev managed to drag Volkanovski to the canvas on two occasions, but the champion escaped quickly each time and re-established his striking dominance.
A well-timed overhand right in the second round appeared to momentarily wobble Evloev, and a subsequent combination opened a cut on the challenger’s head. From that point, Evloev’s ability to absorb punishment visibly deteriorated, and Volkanovski capitalised with the finishing sequence.
Evloev, who entered the fight unbeaten, was gracious in defeat. “It was a terrible fight,” he said. “He’s a good one. Older, stronger, better — he’s truly a legend. I’m grateful for this opportunity. Alex, great champion, I’m happy to share the cage with him.”
The win marks Volkanovski’s second straight title defence since reclaiming the featherweight belt, and further strengthens his case as the greatest featherweight in UFC history. Volkanovski indicated post-fight that he intends to keep competing, suggesting the division’s top contenders will need to form an orderly queue.
