Khabib Nurmagomedov has fuelled fresh speculation about a potential UFC return after posting a photo alongside the promotion’s Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell on his Instagram story — though the undefeated lightweight great described the encounter simply as an “Accidentally meeting.”

Nurmagomedov retired in October 2020 following his submission victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, choosing to walk away with a perfect 29-0 record and the lightweight title. Since then, the Hall of Famer has consistently and firmly dismissed any suggestion of a comeback, most recently reiterating that position as recently as July.

The photo itself offers no indication that his stance has shifted. No agenda was disclosed, and neither Nurmagomedov nor Campbell has provided any further context beyond the caption accompanying the image.

The meeting does arrive at an interesting moment for the Nurmagomedov family’s relationship with the UFC. Khabib’s cousin, Usman Nurmagomedov — the reigning Bellator and PFL lightweight champion — has completed his contracted fights with the Professional Fighters League, leaving his promotional future unresolved. UFC CEO Dana White has publicly stated that the promotion intends to hold talks with Usman once he is free to negotiate.

However, there is no confirmed connection between Usman’s contractual situation and Khabib’s chance encounter with Campbell. The timing may be coincidental, and drawing a direct line between the two would be speculative.

For now, the photo amounts to little more than what Nurmagomedov himself called it: an accidental crossing of paths. Unless either party offers further clarification, the retirement of one of MMA’s most dominant champions remains firmly in place.
