Alexander Volkanovski will carry the UFC featherweight title into the cage at 38 years old when he faces unbeaten contender Movsar Evloev in the main event of UFC 333 this October, and the champion is promising a performance that silences every question about his age.

“I believe I get to go out there at 38 years old and fight a perfect fight, where people are going to think, ‘What?! This guy’s still got another 10 years left in him!’” Volkanovski told Main Event. “Which probably isn’t the case, but I honestly think that’s going to be the conversation after I get the job done.”

Volkanovski is candid about no longer being in his prime, but he frames the Evloev matchup as a chance to prove that distinction barely matters. He describes defending the title at 38 as “cool”, yet insists the real motivation is the challenge of dismantling an undefeated fighter who is very much at the height of his powers.

“I want to fight the best,” Volkanovski said. “I’ve always wanted to fight the best. I wanted the biggest challenge. For me, stylistically, I think it’s a great fight for me. He’s the best guy who deserves it, and I’m the champ that fights the best guys, and that’s that.”

Already regarded as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history, Volkanovski has mapped out precisely how he expects the contest to unfold. He anticipates Evloev will look to close the distance and shoot for takedowns, but believes that strategy will unravel within the first two rounds as fatigue sets in.

“He doesn’t have the knockout power threat,” Volkanovski said. “But because I’m so confident in my takedown defence, in my game, his best bet is to knock me out. He’s gonna be getting too tired to want to keep trying to take me down. Literally, I believe he’d be better off just swinging and trying to catch me. No one in my division can beat me in a decision, and I know that seems to be the only way he wins — but against me that ain’t happening.”

The champion is equally direct about the broader picture. He believes Evloev will struggle to impose his game plan and that the resulting performance will settle any lingering debate about where Volkanovski stands in the sport at this stage of his career.

“Movsar’s gonna want to shoot. He knows how to win, he knows how to get the fight where he wants it, but that just ain’t gonna happen with me,” Volkanovski said. “Even if he does get my back to the mat, I’m bouncing straight back up. I’m breaking free, I’m in his face.”

UFC 333 takes place in October, with the featherweight title bout headlining the card.
